Then & Now

Scarritt Renaissance has been the recipient of many "happy accidents" since its beginnings as a quiet, suburban neighborhood 110 years ago. What follows is one such coincidence. Three factors, the inception of the public-use postcard in 1898 (before this, postcards were used mainly for business correspondence), the work underway on Kansas City's new Parks and Boulevards Plan, and the fact that some major card companies like Hall Brothers (now Hallmark Cards) were located in Kansas City, all came together to give our neighborhood some of the most valuable historical documentation one could hope for. These hand-colored works of art from the turn-of-the-century are treasured collectibles to many area residents, and we're proud to be able to present them here.
